These entries will appear on your Start menu:

Just click on the All Topo Maps selection to start the viewer. If you have purchased and installed more than one state collection you will have an opportunity to choose which state collection to work with:

The Map Viewing Screen

The viewing screen includes speed buttons to:

  • change the viewed window zoom
  • switch map scales
  • turn on and off map annotations
  • preview a 'printed view' of the map annotations
  • search for places, maps and locations
  • search by waypoint

The cursor's location is always shown in the cursor coordinate box , you can choose between common Lat/Lon, UTM and Military Grid Reference (MGRS) coordinate types using the drop button or by pressing F3 to cycle through the choices:

The distance and compass bearing from the {Measurement Spike} to the cursor are always shown in the {Spike} box. Use F4 or the drop button to change the units of the {Spike} box.

A map scale is displayed on the bottom of the window  and a status line provides information about print scales, and system events. A 1,000 meter UTM grid (10,000 meter on 1:250,000 scale maps) can be overlaid on the map by pressing Alt-G, or selecting 'Options: Display 1K Gridlines'.

The All Topo Map viewing screen is optimized to always show as much map on your screen as possible. Map decompression is fast, display, zooming and panning are almost instantaneous.

The Menu Bar provides

File: Map Set and Printer options

Edit: Clipboard, Waypoint and {Measurement Spike} selections

Search: Place Name, Map Name and Coordinate searching

Options: Program Options

View: View Settings

Tools: All Topo Maps tool options

Moving the Map Around the Screen

You can use the arrow keys and the scroll bar handles to move the map around your screen.

Press the shift key and the mouse cursor changes to a hand that you can use to drag the map around the screen.

Double click on any map location to bring the location to the screen center. Double click on a map border to move to an adjacent map.

Setting the Map Scale

Zoom in using the PageDn key (moves the helicopter down). Zoom-Out using the PageUp key (moves the helicopter up). Use the Zoom box to directly set the scale, or use a hot key (Alt-1 100%, Alt-2 200%..).

The resulting map scale depends upon the size of a pixel on your monitor. The 'File: Setup Printer, Map Scale' selection allows you to accurately control the resulting printed map scale. Your map viewing window will be adjusted to match the aspect ratio of your printer so that 'what you see, will be what you get' on the printed output. (See also Tour 9: Printing Maps).

Map Resolution

1:24,000 scale maps are stored at 160 DPI resolution. This results in each displayed pixel representing 3.81 square meters of area. (Alaskan 1:24,000 scale maps are stored at 250 DPI.)

1:100,000 scale maps are stored at 250 dpi resolution which results in 10.61 meters per pixel.

1:250,000 scale maps are stored at 250 DPI resolution which results in 25.4 square meters per pixel.

These two maps show the same location at these two scales:

1:24,000 Scale: The confluence of the Yampa and Green Rivers

1:250,000 Scale: The confluence of the Yampa and Green Rivers
