Copying All Topo Map maps to your fixed drive

These instructions are for Version 6 products. If you have a Version 7 product, please see:

    User's Guide Rev 7.1 pages 110 and 111
    User's Guide Rev 7.2 pages 154...

'Installing Map Data from CD's onto Fixed Drives' or poke around the main menu item: "Options: System Options: Map Data (tab)".

You can move all the maps from the data CD's to your fixed drive, but first consider setting the map cache to a larger size and letting All Topo Maps manage caching the most frequently viewed maps.

The default map cache size is 40 megabytes which holds about 7 maps. Use the menu option 'Options: Coordinate, System Options: Map Cache Size (lower left corner)'  to choose a larger cache.

Moving Maps to your Fixed Drive

You must purchase a All Topo Map state set for each client machine that uses All Topo Maps. This information is provided to assist users with legal installations.

1. Choose a drive with lots of space. Required free space by states:

State Required Space
Arizona 3.71 Gig
Colorado R2 3.77 Gig
Idaho R2 3.83 Gig
New Mexico R2 4.05 Gig
Nevada 3.45 Gig
Texas 6.57 Gig
Wyoming R3 3.81 Gig
Alaska 6.39 Gig
Montana R2 5.25 Gig
Oklahoma 2.61 Gig
South Dakota 2.47 Gig
Washington 3.20 Gig
Alaska 6.39 Gig
California 6.40 Gig
Nebraska 2.50 Gig
Oregon 4.06 Gig
Oklahoma 2.61 Gig
Utah 3.44 Gig
Louisiana 2.17 Gig
Minnesota 3.00 Gig
South Dakota 2.47 Gig

2. Make a folder to place state sets in. For example D:\MAPS\

3. Make a sub-folder for the state set you are loading to disk: For example D:\MAPS\TX\

4. Copy all the files contained in the MAPDATA folder on all the All Topo Maps data disks to the folder. Example: If your CD Rom is drive F: then for each data disk (all 11) at a DOS Command Prompt

"xcopy f:\mapdata\*.* d:\maps\tx\ /y"

Alternatively you can use the Windows Explorer to drag-n-drop the files.

5. Exit All Topo Maps and any of it's helper applications.

6. Edit the file "C:\AllTopo\Bin\AllTopo.INI" and add these entries to the [DIRECTORIES] section:

[DIRECTORIES]
ForceCDSource=0
CDROM1= D:\MAPS\TX

Notes: If you installed All Topo Maps someplace other than the default (C:\AllTopo) your paths may be different. You will need to have a CDROM_ link to each state set. You can append them on one line like:

CDROM1=D:\MAPS\TX;D:\MAPS\UT;D:\MAPS\WY

or use CDROM2, CDROM3 .. CDROM7:

CDROM1=D:\MAPS\TX
CDROM2=D:\MAPS\UT
CDROM3=D:\MAPS\WY

You can verify that you have made the correct settings by starting All Topo Maps, then selecting 'View: System Information Log' from the menu. Look for these entries in the log:

Settings from Preset/INI file 'C:\ALLTOPO\BIN\ALLTOPO.INI'
...    (bunch of entries skipped)
DiskPaths D:\MAPS\TX;D:\MAPS\UT;D:\MAPS\WY
FCDS OFF

FCDS must be set to OFF (if it is not, check your spelling in the INI file for 'ForceCDSource=0'

DiskPaths should list all of the locations where you have stored maps.
